Welcome to the Fire Mage Mythic+guide for the World of Warcraft prepatch 11.0! Here, you can find tips and tricks to maximize your damage output and ensure your character is ready to top the damage charts.
Fire Mage gameplay revolves around your key cooldown, Combustion. This major cooldown provides a satisfying feedback loop between your most used abilities, such as Pyroblast and Flamestrike.
As powerful as Combustion is, managing this well separates the good Mages from the great Mages. Thanks to Sun King's Blessing, your Combustion uptime is fairly high so it is important to handle these burst windows correctly and with precision.
Whether you're new to the spec or looking to refine your skills, this guide provides the information needed to dominate in raids. Get ready to unleash Pyroblasts, harness the power of fire, and become an unstoppable force that no enemy dares to challenge.

Mobility
Excellent
- Fire Mages are known for their burst damage through Combustion and achieve high uptime due to Sun King's Blessing.
- Mobility is also a major selling point of Mages. Shimmer allows them to blink multiple times while casting and is off the GCD.
- Their toolkit includes defensive abilities like Ice Cold and Alter Time. These spells alone do not contribute to Fire Mages having great survivability though, they have three more defensives to choose from!
- Ignite grants them excellent AoE, enabling them to handle any number of enemies efficiently.
- However, like any specialization, Fire Mages have their weaknesses. Two notable drawbacks are their reliance on crits for consistent damage and the cooldown dependency of Combustion. This trade-off makes it difficult to maintain optimal performance during periods of bad RNG or when Combustion is on cooldown. Mismanaging your Combustion windows will leave you at the bottom of the damage meter.

When to use this Spec
This is the main spec used by Fire Mages in Mythic+. This should be your default talent tree.
Gameplay Altering Talents
Discover all talents that significantly alter your gameplay within the Spec and Class Talent trees. This section gives a concise overview of these talents and their applications but for a more detailed look check out the Rotation and Deep Dive sections below.
Spec Tree
- Sun King's Blessing
- Fire Mage for the last couple of years has had this talent in some way or another and it is a defining feature of Fire. Most of your rotation revolves around this and optimizing your Combustion uptime.
- Phoenix Reborn
- This is a returning tier set turned into a talent. This talent gives you more Phoenix Flames charges and empowers them.
- Kindling
- This is a big part of why Fire Mages have Combustion up so often. This talent ends up reducing your Combustion to around a minute cooldown.
- Flame Accelerant
- This is up for a majority of your hard casted Sun King's Blessing spells. The increased cast speed can be surprisingly useful.
Class Tree
- Shifting Power
- This spell is used after your cooldowns to get them back quicker.
- Spellsteal
- There are a lot of mechanics you can Spellsteal to gain their benefit.
- Time Anomaly
- Be ready to react to the procs you get from this talent, they can impact your rotation differently depending on when they proc.
- Mass Barrier
- Make sure to use Mass Barrier to help your dungeon teammates out.
- Shimmer
- This talent node is the main reason mage in general has such high mobility. Being castable while casting and ignoring the GCD, it is essential you manage your Shimmer well to achieve 100% uptime on DPS during any encounter.
When to use this Spec
This is a common playstyle to use at lower key levels for Fire Mage in Mythic+. It provides more upfront damage with Flamestrikes.

Rotation
Patch 11.0 - The War Within
Fire Mage
Tier Set
- (2pc): Pyroblast and Flamestrike cast with Heating up deal 10% increased damage.
- (4pc): Fire Blast, Phoenix Flames and Fireball deal 10% increased damage and their chance to critically strike is increased by 10%.
This tier set is completely passive and you do not need to think about it at all.
Single Target
Opener Rotation
The goal of your single target opener rotation is to enter Combustion as quick as you can while reacting to your Pyroblast crits.
- If the precasted Pyroblast did not crit, cast a Fire Blast during the fireball cast and then also activate Combustion during the Fireball cast.
- If the precasted Pyroblast did crit, then activate Combustion during the fireball cast.
Combustion Priority List
Combustion is fire mages main cooldown and with how much uptime you can obtain on Combustion with Sun King's Blessing, maximizing these windows is crucial to playing fire mage correctly.
- Hard cast Pyroblast with 10 stacks of Sun King's Blessing
- Cast Pyroblast with Hot Streak
- Cast Fire Blast with Heating up
- Cast Phoenix Flames with Heating up to prevent overcapping Phoenix Flames
- Cast Scorch
Outside of Combustion Priority List
- Cast Shifting Power after Combustion
- Hard cast Pyroblast with 10 stacks of Sun King's Blessing
- Cast Pyroblast with Hot Streak
- Cast Phoenix Flames with Heating up to prevent overcapping Phoenix Flames
- Cast Fire Blast if you are about to cap on charges
- Cast Fire Blast with Heating up
- Cast Scorch if the target is below 30% health
- Cast Fireball
Outside of Combustion you want to aggressively spend Phoenix Flames to get to the next Sun King's Blessing window. Avoid overspending Phoenix Flames.
Ignite Multi Target
If using the Ignite build, which is recommended, the rotation is exactly the same as single target. With the Ignite build, Ignite is passively spread when casting Fire Blast to the mobs surrounding the main mob you are targeting.
Flamestrike Multi Target
The Flamestrike build is essentially the same as the Ignite build but you replace Pyroblast with Flamestrike
Combustion Priority List
- Hard cast Flamestrike with 10 stacks of Sun King's Blessing
- Cast Flamestrike with Hot Streak
- Cast Fire Blast with Heating up
- Cast Phoenix Flames with Heating up to prevent overcapping Phoenix Flames
- Cast Scorch
Outside of Combustion Priority List
Outside of Combustion using the Flamestrike build still uses Fireball as filler but spends Hot Streak on Flamestrike
- Cast Shifting Power after Combustion
- Hard cast Flamestrike with 10 stacks of Sun King's Blessing
- Cast Flamestrike with Hot Streak
- Cast Phoenix Flames with Heating up to prevent overcapping Phoenix Flames
- Cast Fire Blast if you are about to cap on charges
- Cast Fire Blast with Heating up
- Cast Scorch if the target is below 30% health
- Cast Fireball
Deep Dive
Patch 11.0 - The War Within
Fire Mage
Ignite
An important aspect of doing damage with the Ignite build, especially in lower keys, is to swap your Ignite off of your priority target before that target dies or you need to swap. You can achieve this by having your last global be a Fire Blast before swapping targets. By doing this, fire mages do not lose any damage if their priority target dies or they need to swap off of a target to another one.
Phoenix Flames vs Fire Blast
Understanding the differences has a steep learning curve when playing Fire Mage for the first time. Fire Blast is off the GCD, castable while casting and instantly hits the target when you cast it. Phoenix Flames on the other hand, is on the GCD, not castable while casting, and has a travel time before it hits the target. This drastic difference can cause issues because of the gameplay loop between generating and spending Hot Streaks. Since you use Fire Blast fairly frequently, you might expect Phoenix Flames to behave the same but, it is the polar opposite. The best advice is to expect these "rhythm disruptions" during your Combustion and become more comfortable with waiting for your Phoenix Flames to hit the target.
Losing damage by being far away from the target due to Phoenix Flames travel time.
Phoenix Flames has a very slow travel time. Depending on your haste and distance from the boss, this can cost you damage. You lose damage because you can be in a position where you are waiting for your Phoenix Flames to hit the target while your global is ready. The simplest way to fix this issue is to be closer to the boss. Another way you can fix this issue is by doing something called, "Phoenix Flames Weaving." This is only doable when you have high haste and are forced to be far away from the target. After casting Pyroblast during your Combustion, you will have a Heating up. You can then cast Phoenix Flames into Fire Blast into a Pyroblast Pyroblast combo. You can achieve this because you send the Pyroblast before the Phoenix Flames hits the target. This completely negates the time you lose by waiting for your Phoenix Flames to hit the target while your GCD is ready. Here is what it should look like.
It is important to remember that this is only doable with high haste and you need to be at least 20+ yards away from the target.
Understanding Mechanics
Rotational min-maxing is just one aspect of mastering a specialization, but there are numerous other key mechanics that influence your performance. Use the following guides to improve them.

Boss Tips
Hackclaw's War-Band
- Always Alter Time whenever Gash Frenzy by Gashtooth is being cast to completely negate the boss mechanic.
- In case your tank is still hexed or dead and Savage Charge is on you, it's possible to dodge it with a properly timed Blink or Shimmer.
- Make sure to have damage prepared for Hextrick Totem to break it as fast as possible.
- Save your Mirror Image for the Hextrick Totem spawn. This allows you to get some extra time to break your tank and healer out of the CC while the boss is running after your Images.
Gutshot
- Help your team control the hyenas with Frost Nova and other slows if you are failing to utilize boss traps on them.
Treemouth
- Blast Wave and Dragon's Breath should be used to stop the slimes that spawn from Decay Spray before they complete their Gushing Ooze cast. Otherwise, your group can completely wipe.
Decatriarch Wratheye
- Make sure to have damage prepared by having Combustion for Rotburst Totem to break it as fast as possible.
- Rotate defensives on Withered Eruption. Generally just a Blazing Barrier is enough to live.
Trash Tips
- Make sure to stop Vicious Clawmangle from Claw Fighter's with any of your available stops.
Boss Tips
The Lost Dwarves
- Put Olaf on focus to quickly interrupt his Defensive Bulwark when casted. Otherwise, he will shield his allies and give them damage reduction while the shield lasts.
- Ricocheting Shield can be cancelled by casting Greater Invisibility. Be careful as it will be instantly re-casted on another member of your group. This should only be done as a last resort.
Bromach
- Make sure to have damage prepared for Quaking Totem to break it as fast as possible to limit your group's damage intake.
Talondras
- Use defensives while you're affected by Earthen Shards, especially if Crushing Stomp is coming up.
Emberon
- Rotate your defensive abilities for every cast of Unstable Embers, especially those overlapping with the Burning Heat debuff.
Deios
- Due to Energized Barriers, Time Sink can be removed by Blazing Barrier or Mass Barrier.
- Rotate through Alter Time, Ice Cold, Greater Invisibility and Mirror Image to cover every Wing Buffet cast.
Trash Tips
- Cast Spellsteal on Hasten for extra haste. Spellsteal can also be used on Earthen Ward for a giant absorb shield.
- Remember that you can Remove Curse Curse of Stone to avoid the stun and the following imminent death.
Boss Tips
Granyth
- Be prepared to cast Polymorph on a Nokhud Saboteur as it is a common strategy to prevent him from casting Dismantle. Keep in mind that you will need to keep that mob polymorphed throughout the encounter.
Raging Tempest
- Maximizing Surge of Power stacks is crucial to have an easier time on this encounter since Surge of Power doesn't only buff damage, but also healing absorbs. Using Blazing Barrier with 10 stacks guarantees that you survive with ease, especially if you time it correctly with the bosses Electrical Storm.
Teera & Maruuk
- Make sure to save Alter Time in case you get a shoot casted on you before Gale Arrow. This alleviates the pressure placed on your healer from quickly trying to top your health before Gale Arrow lands.
- Rotate through a combination of Blazing Barrier, Mirror Image and Greater Invisibility to survive every Gale Arrow.
Balakar Khan
- Iron Spear and Static Spear can be cancelled with Greater Invisibility if targeted on you. Make sure to use it when the boss is casting the spell on you and not when you are first targeted.
- Make sure to rotate a defensive for each Static Spear and Upheaval cast.
Trash Tips
- Swift Stab is casted on the furthest target and can be dodged with high movement speed or teleports like Blink and Shimmer.
- Make sure to stop Rally the Clan with Dragon's Breath or Blast Wave.
- You can Spellsteal Swirling Gusts for a huge absorb shield. Ideally you want to save these shields for the boss so it is important that you and your group do not run into them while finding the packs around the boss area.
Boss Tips
Overgrown Ancient
- Use a defensive on every Burst Forth cast that happens at 100 energy of the boss.
- You should use Ice Block without Ice Cold. This allows you to remove the Splinterbark debuff.
Crawth
- Deafening Screech happens roughly every 23 seconds. Be sure to plan your defensive abilities accordingly.
- Another encounter where playing Ice Block without Ice Cold allows you to remove Deafening Screech stacks. This lets you essentially live for a very long time before you need to reset your stacks.
Vexamus
- Mana Bomb is the major damage event during the fight. You should plan your defensives around this.
- Sometimes Mana Bomb can overlap with the Arcane Fissure cast, you ideally should have a big defensive planned like Ice Block or Greater Invisibility to handle this overlap.
Trash Tips
- You can line of sight the Vicious Ambush cast from the Arcane Ravager. The cast always targets the furthest away player and running out of line of sight causes the Arcane Ravager to not charge to you. Instead it will immediately start its Riftbreath cast.
- You can Spellsteal the Celestial Shield of Ethereal Restorer's to gain a shield that grants you haste while it persists.
Boss Tips
Gulping Goliath
- Help your team control the Curious Swoglets with any of your CC spells available like Blast Wave and Cone of Cold.
Khajin
- Do your best to not overlap your defensive abilities with your healer cooldowns. This fight is entirely reliant on playing defensively and making sure your healer can handle the pressure so be sure to help them out.
Primal Tsunami
- Always have a defensive for every Tempest's Fury.
- You can use Polymorph on 1 of the 4 Primalist Infusers to interrupt them without them starting to cast Inundate. This also prevents the boss from gaining stacks early on while keeping the enemy controlled.
Trash Tips
- Use Blazing Barrier to cleanse yourself from Deep Chill while fighting any Proto-Dragon. This is possible thanks to the Energized Barriers talent.
- You can outrange the Inundate cast of Infuser Sariya by standing over 40 yards away.
Boss Tips
Leymor
- Rotate through a combination of Blazing Barrier, Mirror Image and Greater Invisibility to live each Consuming Stomp cast.
Telash Greywing
- Make sure to use a defensive ability when targeted by Icy Devastator.
- Rotate through a combination of Blazing Barrier, Mirror Image and Greater Invisibility to live each Absolute Zero cast.
Umbrelskul
- Defensives should be used during the Detonating Crystals phases.
Trash Tips
- You can Spellsteal Arcane Fury to get a 35% damage increase. Be careful to not go out of mana by Spellstealing too much.
- One of the important interrupts in this dungeon is Icy Bindings from the Rune Seal Keeper. Since it's usually paired with other adds that spawn void zones under your feet that you can't dodge if you're rooted.
Boss Tips
Magmatusk
- Use defensives for each Volatile Mutation casted.
- The Lava Spray cast can be cancelled with Greater Invisibility.
Chargath, Bane of Scales
- Alter Time can be used for every Grounding Spear. Be careful to position yourself properly so once you use Alter Time you are also out of fire from the spear.
- If you're a Dwarf, you can remove the bleed from Dragon Strike with Stoneform if necessary.
- You can bait Dragon Strike on the furthest player from the target. This means that your tank should take most of them but, you can bait some of them to go on you since you will be prepared to tank it.
Forgemaster Gorek
- Might of the Forge happens close to Blazing Aegis which is very deadly. You should use your defensives pre-emptively during the Might of the Forge cast.
- Might of the Forge can be fully cancelled by pressing Greater Invisibility if you are the one targeted by the mechanic.
Warlord Sargha
- Remember that you can pick up multiple Piles of Gold to stack up more than one useable item.
- Remove Curse should be used to remove Curse of the Dragon Hoard from yourself or your teammates.
Trash Tips
- Keep an eye out for Qalashi Bonesplitter's Dragonbone Axe ability and disrupt it with your available toolkit.
Boss Tips
Melidrussa Chillworn
- At 75% and 45%, Melidrussa spawns tons of Infused Whelps that can be used to funnel damage on the boss.
- Defensives should generally be used for each Chillstorm cast.
Kokia Blazehoof
- Rotate defensives for each Inferno cast.
- Ritual of Blazebinding can kill your Mirror Images so make sure to cast the spell either outside of the explosion or right after.
Erkhart Stormvein / Kyrakka
- Winds of Change rotates counterclockwise from its starting point.
- Defensives are generally not needed in Phase 1. In Phase 2 on the other hand, use a personal every time you get hit by Flamespit as it is extremely deadly.
Trash Tips
- You can Spellsteal Burning Ambition to get a haste buff but, be careful since it also increases your damage taken by quite a bit.
- Living Bomb can be utilized to damage and knock up trash mobs.
- Watch out for Tectonic Slam and Flame Dance and help your group with stopping them.
Affixes
Learn how to effectively handle various Mythic+ Affixes as a Fire Mage. Depending on the level of the Mythic+ Dungeon you face up to two additional Affixes alongside Fortified and Tyrannical.
- Entangling
- Energized Barriers lets you remove Entangling completely by casting Blazing Barrier.
- Both Ice Floes & Shimmer are great mobility tools to get out of Entangling.
- Incorporeal
- Polymorph
- Afflicted
- Remove Curse
- Volcanic
- Ice Floes is a great tool to handle this affix.
- Bolstering
- Fire Mage has the luxury of using single target abilities during AoE, use this to your advantage by swapping targets to even out the health of mobs.
- Spiteful
- Slow them with Blast Wave & Cone of Cold.
- Talent into Ring of Frost if this affix is a big problem for your group.
- Sanguine
- Volatile Detonation is a great tool to knock mobs out of Sanguine.

Races
Patch 11.0 - The War Within
Fire Mage
For min-maxing a Fire Mage in Mythic+, different racial traits can provide a tremendous benefit to your characters. If this is not your top goal, picking a race that fits your style works just as well.
- Stoneform -- Dwarf
- One of the most potent racials in Mythic+ currently and historically.
- Use-cases:
- Bursting stacks.
- Splinterbark on Overgrown Ancient (Algeth'ar Academy).
- Deep Chill from Glacial Proto-Dragons (Halls of Infusion).
- Withering from Fetid Rotsingers and Brackenhide Shapers (Brackenhide Hollow).
- Earthen Shards from Sentinel Talondras (Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr).
- Stolen Time from Infinite Timereavers (Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr).
- Dragon Strike from Chargath (Neltharus).
- Bold Ambush from Qalashi Hunters (Neltharus).
- Shadowmeld -- Night Elf
- Also one of the most potent racials in Mythic+ historically.
- Use-cases:
- Cast Shadowmeld when Forgemaster Gorek (Neltharus) targets you with Blazing Aegis, this completely negate the mechanic for you and the rest of the group.
- Run past basically any mob and then cast Shadowmeld to make them reset. Even works on mobs that have stealth detection if you get enough distance before you Shadowmeld.
- Escape Artist -- Gnome
- Free yourself from roots.
- Rocket Jump -- Goblin
- Do a small jump in the direction your character is facing.
- While you're in the Rocket Jump animation you are placed on a global cooldown until your character lands.
Recommendation
Even if Dwarf and Night Elf aren't the overall best racials in terms of DPS but their abilities have such a big impact on your Mythic+ experience that you need to use either of them if you're serious about pushing keys with your Fire Mage. If you wish to simply play the race with the highest damage, you should pick either Dwarf or Tauren. They have the same passive damage increase but Dwarf has a far superior racial ability for Mythic+.
